Happy Birthday Venice!

Venice has a history spanning almost 16 centuries:

in fact the foundation of the Serenissima’s city is traced back to the legendary laying of the first stone of the San Giacomo of Rialto church, San Giacometo, as the Venetians still call it today.

We are, according to tradition, in 421 a. C., on 25th March

In reality the church was almost certainly built after the year one thousand, but this symbolic date is now in use to indicate the birth of the lagoon city. So, today 25th March 2020, Venice celebrates 1599 years!

But what did Venice look like, say, five hundreds years ago?

There is an antique Venice map, one of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance, that still surprises us by revealing how the lagoon city used to be. It is the astonishingly detailed and iconic bird’s-eye View of Venice by Jacopo de’ Barbari, published in the year 1500 (you can admire it in all its beauty in this video below made by the Fondazione Musei civici Venezia).

Every building, canal and open square is documented here.

An artistic and technical marvel, the View of Venice is a landmark in the history of printmaking. It was printed in sections on six separate sheets of paper, from six carved wooden blocks.

The Correr Museum houses the original wooden blocks used to print the View of Venice, also on display in the museum.
